The Quirimbas National Park includes the southern Quirimbas Islands, but not Metundo Island which is where we focused our short study. The aim was to assess the coral reef and fish populations around Metundo Island and we undertook short surveys on Medjumbe Island and St. Lazarus Bank, which lies about 100 nautical miles east of northern Mozambique’s coast set in very deep water. The plateau reaches about 6 to 60 m deep but it drops to over 2,000 m around it. We were based initially on Vamizi Island and used from a boat from Vamizi Lodge, working with Eric Allard and Alastair Louw of Extreme Adventures Ltd., who have local knowledge of the reef structure. When M.Y. Danah Explorer arrived, we moved on board and worked from small boats off the main boat. Captain Mick Norman is a lovely man with a great crew, providing a really good atmosphere and facilities to make the work as effective and efficient as possible.
