We are gearing up to continue working with the Cayman Islands Dept. of Environment and will make the first trip in late April. So much to do beforehand to prepare but it is really exciting and we are looking forward to beginning. The project is Sustainable Management of Threatened Keystone Predators to Enhance Reef Resilience and will tie in with our earlier work and that of John Turner’s team.
Rupert and Mauvis flew up to Abu Dhabi from the Seychelles trip to attend the “Coral Reefs of Arabia” Conference, hosted by New York University Abu Dhabi Institute at the Saadiyat Campus. Following on from the Jeddah conference, it widened the area of work in the region. The topics and talks were good and interesting and delicious food flowed constantly. A highlight was meeting up with the fantastic former Ras Mohammed National Park, Sinai, Egypt, park rangers and colleagues from Suez Canal University, who we haven’t seen for some time now. It was also a chance to meet some of the male colleagues at KAUST in Saudi Arabia as I had only met the women at the Jeddah conference. As Corresponding Secretary for the ISRS, Rupert gave the prizes to students for best presentations. There was time to visit the Grand Mosque with our Egyptian friends and colleagues and to admire the beautiful structure with such intricate detailed work. We went on to Dubai to visit David Robinson who is assistant curator at the Burj Al Arab aquarium in the Burj Al Khalifa. Rupert is David’s PhD supervisor and they spent time going over the thesis. Dubai centre bristles with tall glass walled buildings that sparkle in the mornings when the sun is still low. |
