Rupert, Mauvis & Cat arrived in Little Cayman on Sunday and spent the day reassembling our gear that all arrived (yeah!). Our first day out on Monday showed up where we needed to make some changes for working on a smaller boat. Our scientific longline picked up several nurse sharks (Ginglyostoma cirratum), the first of which was a young male with a dorsal fin tag. We just checked the data base and he was tagged in June 2011, which was 4 1/2 years ago! He has put on 39 cm (15") in stretched total length (that is, measuring from the tip of his snout along the body and up to the tip of his tail).
There is also a female Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi) that is still seen regularly off Little Cayman that was tagged with a dorsal fin tag in October 2010, 5 years ago now!
